Staying Safe

Due to varying security levels across the country, adherence to strict security and health precautions is recommended. Here is a list of the best advice for staying safe while visiting Nigeria, categorized for clarity.

  • Maintain a Low Profile:

    • Dress Modestly: Avoid wearing expensive clothing, jewelry, or conspicuously displaying high-end electronic gadgets. The goal is to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

    • Minimize Cash: Carry only the necessary amount of cash. Use ATMs in secure, public, or bank-controlled locations and during daylight hours.

  • Stay Alert and Unpredictable:

    • Be Aware of Your Surroundings (Situational Awareness): Stay vigilant, especially in crowded areas like markets, public transport, and at the airport.

    • Vary Routines: If you are staying for a prolonged period, change your travel routes and times to avoid establishing predictable patterns.

  • Handle Encounters with Criminals:

    • Do Not Resist: If confronted by armed criminals, do not physically resist any robbery or mugging attempt. Cooperation is the safest course of action to avoid escalating the violence.

  • Protect Documentation:

    • Keep Originals Safe: Store your passport and original documents securely at your accommodation. Only carry photocopies of your identification for checkpoints.

Safety Do's and Don'ts

Road travel, especially outside major cities and at night, carries a high risk of armed banditry and kidnapping.

  • Avoid Self-Driving: It is strongly recommended to hire a reputable driver or use a reliable car-hire service, often available through major hotels in Lagos and Abuja.

  • Only Use Verified Transport:

    • Ride-Hailing: In major cities (Lagos, Abuja), reliable ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt are a safer option than unverified street taxis.

    • Airport Transfers: Pre-arrange your airport pickup with your hotel or a trusted service to avoid unverified taxi drivers.

  • Avoid Night Travel: Do not travel by road after dark, especially between cities, as the risk of armed attacks and kidnapping significantly increases.

  • On the Road: Keep car doors locked and windows closed at all times. Do not stop in isolated areas or to assist strangers who may be running a roadside scam.
